The skincare industry is massive! There are tons of skincare routines + products that claim to target/prevent/conceal/battle everything from acne scars to hyperpigmentation to fine lines and wrinkles and much, much more. Interested in starting your skincare journey but feel overwhelmed or confused as you don’t know how and where to start? I’ve been there too. But lately, I have been doing a lot of research and have come to learn about the importance of taking care of our skin, something that I neglected in the past. Since this is a lifestyle blog, why not dabble into skincare here? I will be sharing my skincare journey, reviews and even help you discover things along the way✨
Note: I am no expert but I am genuinely interested in skincare so everything that I share here is from my experience. Honest reviews/opinions will be included in all of my skincare posts.
- Skip research
- Expect instant results
- Neglect sunscreen
- Sleep with make-up on
- Rely only on skincare products (remember to eat healthily and drink lots of H20)💧
The DON’Ts listed above are lessons from my own experiences in the past. You see, I want to be as transparent as possible with you, so here it goes: growing up, I did not care for my skin at ALL. In fact, I hardly wore sunscreen and I did not own a cleanser or even a moisturizer until just recently. Additionally, in the past, I used wet wipes to take off my make up and…are you ready for this? On some occasions, (although seldom), I did find myself falling asleep with makeup on! I know… GASP! :O Sleeping with your make up on is a crime in the skincare world, so forgive me for I have sinned BUT I am wiser now, or at least wise enough to not let that happen again.
The very first cleanser I bought was the clean and clear morning burst, skin brightening cleanser and long story short? It did not do much for my skin. Why? The product was drying, it did not make my skin feel hydrated and unlike what the product claims, the beads in the cleanser didn’t just melt away as I applied the cleanser. I blindly bought the product, to be honest. I had seen an ad about it somewhere and when I saw it in the shelf at a drug mart, I was like, “okay… found a cleanser, EASY”.
EXCEPT . . .
finding good skincare products for your skin is not so easy as everyone’s skin is different and how we react to certain products is different too. While Clean and Clear may work for some, it is important to realize that it won’t for others. When I realized that the cleanser was not working for me, that’s when I really started getting into skincare; I went online and began my research and got introduced to Kbeauty (Korean beauty).
After doing a lot of research online and watching countless of youtube videos, I have decided to try: Korean skincare routine
That brings me to. . .
- Your Research
- Read ingredients
- Identify your skincare concerns
- Check in with your skin, time to time
- Try samples
The DOs list here is inspired by the changes that I’ve made since learning my lesson from my past experiences relating to skincare. If you are just starting out with your skincare routine, I hope that you find this list helpful as these are the things that helped me figure out that I wanted to give Korean skincare a try.
Top 5 tips for starting YOUR skincare routine:
Tip #1: Identify your skin concerns + learn about your skin type. Before you start looking into products, find out what your skin type is and what kind of products will suit your skin. Also, ask yourself: what are my skin concerns? List them down. This can help you in deciding what you want to focus on when embarking on your skincare journey.
Tip #2: Do your research! Like I have not emphasized this already in this post…but seriously, do your homework! Look into lots of products and skincare routines out there – read about it, watch videos/ look at reviews. Don’t limit yourself to one or two brands, rather explore many – to help you from feeling overwhelmed, I’d say take it a step at a time. Pick one brand, look at the products from that brand, find what you like, read about it/watch videos about it and do the same for others too.
Tip #3: Read the ingredients. People often blindly buy things because of how the packaging looks or what a product claims to do, however, both the claims and the packaging can be quite deceiving sometimes, therefore, its crucial that you learn about the ingredients that a skincare product contains.
Tip #4: TRY SAMPLES! Go to stores that carry the products you are interested in (if you can) and ask for samples. If you like a sample, you can purchase the whole product and call it yours. Of course, this is difficult if the products you are interested in are not found in stores near you and you have to order online, but that’s where tip #1 comes in handy. Even if you can’t go to the stores, you can read reviews + do your part of the research.
Tip #5: Don’t simply rely on reviews: while reading reviews can be helpful, everyone’s experience is their own. What I mean by this is that while one product may work for someone and they may even swear by it, it may not work for you. This is because our skin can react differently to products. The truth is, no matter how much research you do, or reviews you read, you will never know how good a skincare product is for you until you try it out for yourself. Research certainly helps but you may find yourself being unsatisfied with a product that you initially liked upon doing your research. It is important to accept this reality and realize that while it may be disappointing to try a product that you were looking forward to for a long time, only to find out it does not work for you, you can still see this as an opportunity to share YOUR experience with others now and/or try to find products that work for you better.
“I regret taking good care of my skin” – SAID NO ONE EVER.
