Quick Snapshot of Chandragiri Hills:

  • Chandragiri Hills is located in Thankot, which is a 30-40 minutes drive from the Capital city, Kathmandu (That is, if you’re lucky and the traffic is on your side. It took me around 1.5 hours to get there)
  • As a result of a recent cable car project, Chandragiri Hills has become a popular tourist destination in the last two years
  • On top of the hill, you will find the Bhaleshwor Mahadev temple and thanks to the new cable car project, you no longer have to hike 3 hours to get there

“Rain, rain, go away – come again, another day” – I never thought that a nursery rhyme could so accurately describe how I felt when it started pouring cats and dogs as we reached our destination. While the cable car ride was great, I was not able to see the view well because it was really foggy.

Chandragiri Hills is known to offer a beautiful view of Kathmandu and I was really looking forward to checking it out. But of course, it had to rain. Best day to visit wasn’t it? Alas, that is the life of a traveller – no matter what life throws at you on your travels, you have to make the most out of your experience. Well, at least that’s how I view it and so I was grateful to be able to finally check out Chandragiri Hills as I had heard so much about it.

They say your wishes will come true when you pray at the Bhaleshwor Temple. I made it right on time for the morning puja (prayer) and honestly, it felt so peaceful and serene.

F O O D + D R I N K @ The Chandragiri Hills Cafe:

Growing up, on the days that we visited the temple, my family always ate vegetarian food and so I opted for a vegetarian meal at the cafe. However, the cafe does offer non-vegetarian food items too. At the cafe, I ordered veggie chowmein and potato wedges (the potato wedges comes with a small side of salad). While the veggie chowmein was nothing out of the ordinary, the potato wedges tasted really good – I personally loved the chilly powder that came with it as it complimented the wedges really well. You see that red powder in the picture? Doesn’t it look like it would be really spicy? Well, in reality, it was not spicy at all which was perfect for me because I can’t really have spicy food!

As for drinks, I went with sweet lassi. The good: The lassi was not overly sweet! I know, I ordered the sweet lassi, but you see, there is a huge difference between sweet lassi and suuuupeeer sweet lassi, which not a lot of places understand, and so they just dump A LOT of sugar into the drink. But honestly speaking, this lassi wasn’t anything too special. Nothing beats the lassi that I mentioned in my previous post, yes that’s right, I’m talking about the lassi in Indirachowk.

T H E  V I E W: As I was making my way back down, the weather became slightly better as it stopped raining and so I was able to see the gorgeous view, finally. It made my trip all the more better and I remember thinking to myself,  “Now I see why they say that you can see a beautiful view of the city from Chandragiri Hills”.

T H E  V E R D I C T:

Chandragiri Hills is a wonderful place to visit. You can go to the temple, check out the lovely view of the capital city, eat at the cafe, and there is even a gift store, where you can buy nice souvenirs to make your trip memorable. With all that said, I would definitely recommend you to make plans to visit Chandragiri Hills during your stay in Kathmandu.

Let me know if you liked this post, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
